Before Elim Lutheran Church was organized, the early settlers buried their dead in the Freemount Lutheran Cemetery. With the organization of Lutheran Church in Marquette, a new cemetery was needed. The land was donated by Andrew Erickson. The first person to be buried in the cemetery was Dora Carlson, infant daughter of Gust and Anna Carlson. She died on August 10, 1879 and is buried at the very west end of the cemetery. In 1927, the ladies organization of the church installed a gate for the cemetery. In 1937, a steel post and woven wire fence was installed around the cemetery. On August 4, 1958 the Marquette Cemetery District was formed. The mayor of the city is president, city treasurer is the treasurer, and the trustee of the township is the secretary. They have control over the cemeteries and provide for their care and maintenance. The Lutheran Cemetery with continue to be a resting place for the members of Elim Lutheran Church.
